I've had this conversation a few months or weeks ago with my friends: the way that it's framed makes it seem like it's a prequel of it's own movie.
I mean, think about it: Both Sonic and Eggman look or act different from their game counterparts, we have the forgotten side character who won't be referenced in any future movies and we have the ending scenes foreshadowing where the characters end up in life. The only thing we need is the chronological sequel to set the same status quo, only to break it by the end of it.
This may be food for thought, but I still believe in this theory. Either way, it seems like SEGA snd Paramount are taking the long route to creating a franchise or cinematic universe; instead of rushing into it like most properties, only for them to fail at both.
